Full Specification
Samsung Galaxy A33 has 5.0 inches touchscreen display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels at 295 ppi pixel density. This phone runs on Android 7.1 Nougat OS. The processor is Octa-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 along with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB Internal Memory (expandable up to 256 GB).
The Camera department consists of a 13 MP back camera and an 8 MP front shooter for selfies and video calling. It has a 2650 mAh battery capacity with a talk time of 21 hours on 2G and 25 hours on 3G networks, a standby time of 1020 hours on 2G, and 1590 hours on 3G networks.
The Galaxy A3 and A5 were two of Samsung’s most popular smartphones, as they offered an affordable, smaller variant of its best phones. Unfortunately, they haven’t been released in many countries, including US and Canada.
The company is obviously aware of that fact too because it launched a new line called A which aims to offer devices with powerful features at affordable prices.
If you thought about buying an entry-level phone from Samsung but don’t want to deal with low specs or cheap build quality, then you should check out our review on one of their latest offerings – The Samsung Galaxy A33.
Samsung has launched a new series of smartphones called A. So far, two devices have been announced as part of it – The Galaxy A3 and A5, both released in December 2017. Now, however, we are getting a third phone to join them – The Galaxy A33.
Just like its predecessors, it is an affordable device with decent specs and features that can easily compete with other mid-range phones. We had some time to play around with it during MWC 2018, so read on if you want to know more about it!
At first glance, it’s not hard to see that Samsung has been heavily inspired by its own products in designing and building The Galaxy A33. It has a plastic build with a metal frame, just like many of their flagships in 2017, and features Samsung’s Infinity Display design, which means there is barely any bezel on all sides.
Overall, it feels well built and sturdy but you can definitely tell that it’s made out of plastic. It comes in two colors – Black and Gold, with our unit being Black. We would have loved to see more color options as well as a glass back panel, but we are sure Samsung didn’t want to invest too much money into launching new smartphones under a new line.
Full Features
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; quad-band UMTS/HSPA; LTE, NFC and infra red port. Unlocked, compatible with GSM and UMTS frequencies of all SIM cards worldwide, including in North America! An entirely barebones phone featuring no apps of any kind preinstalled.
(This may be because Samsung is launching it as a developer edition device for other companies to build on.) Runs the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, so you’ll need to update from there if you’re expecting a lot of fancy new features (such as Lollipop). The phone comes in black or white options, though whether or not carrier branding will be available has yet to be announced.
No front-facing camera, though there is a rear camera of decent quality. It has a 13MP sensor and a 5x optical zoom. In addition to standard shooting modes, such as panorama and HDR, it also comes with various other fun modes including Beauty Face (that smooths out skin),
Virtual Tour Guide (records video while guiding you around), Sports Shot (supposedly better at catching action shots), Sound&Shot (records sound and voice at the same time), and Drama Shot (blends multiple photos together). The front-facing camera has an 8MP sensor but lacks any form of flash or special effects options.
This might be a bit onerous for fans of selfies but not so much for those using their phones for the business. And really, if you’re looking for a great selfie phone we’d strongly suggest checking out phones like the Samsung S5
Active or even diving into midrange smartphones like Motorola’s Moto X Pure Edition that offer more bang for your buck in terms of features. Battery life rated at 1,860mAh capacity and removable storage expandable up to 128GB via microSD card slot.
The battery is removable which can come in handy if you want to carry an extra one when you’re on vacation far from wall sockets because… Where’s My Charger?
Pros & Cons
For a phone that costs less than $200 on Amazon, it comes with an attractive design and impressive performance. The screen is sharp and crisp, while battery life is good enough to get you through a day of use. On top of that, its camera is solid.
But there are some cons to consider: Samsung’s ugly proprietary UI skin might not appeal to everyone; screen quality deteriorates under direct sunlight; performance drops when playing games for longer periods of time; and lastly, no fast charging available with the micro USB cable provided inbox.
Overall, while it’s not perfect, Samsung’s new budget smartphone is a great value at less than $200. It looks and feels better than most sub-$200 phones and offers performance that is on par with much more expensive devices in its class.
For anyone looking for an affordable Android device to do basic things like web browsing and social media activities without breaking their budget, it’s worth considering. Just note that you might need to buy a spare micro USB cable to charge your phone quickly if you don’t already have one.
